The examination of the request to limit the activity of the “Great Moldova” party has been suspended. The political party asked the Constitutional Court to review the legality of several provisions that allow authorities to restrict party activity based on reasonable suspicions without evidence of illegal actions.
The partys lawyer, Igor Hlopetchi, told IPN that the regulations remain vague and allow abusive application, including against opposition parties. He said that authorities have not confirmed the accusations against the party since the electoral campaign and have not opened any criminal proceedings.
In this context, the lawyer referred to the case Political Party Patria and Others v. the Republic of Moldova, in which the European Court of Human Rights found a violation of the right to free elections and ordered the state to pay compensation.
The case will remain suspended until the Constitutional Court issues its ruling. The defense says the procedure could last up to six months, but the exact timeframe remains unknown.
