The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has stated that its staff-level agreement with the Republic of Moldova remains valid despite the resignation of Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, according to Bani.md.

“We have taken note of Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu’s resignation. The staff-level agreement remains in effect. Progress toward consideration of the new program by the IMF Executive Board will depend on the authorities’ implementation of the commitments they have undertaken. The International Monetary Fund remains committed to supporting the Republic of Moldova’s efforts to maintain macroeconomic stability and advance the implementation of reforms,” the IMF said in a statement provided to Bani.md.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation on July 3, saying he could no longer carry out his mandate in accordance with his principles and convictions.

Moldova previously reached a staff-level agreement with the IMF, although the understanding does not include new financing.

The country’s previous IMF program expired at the end of October 2025. Moldova did not receive the final two disbursements, worth approximately $170 million, after failing to meet several agreed conditions, particularly those related to fiscal discipline and public spending.
