The Republic of Moldova will increase its natural gas security reserves by 6.5 million cubic meters, bringing the total to 56.3 million m³ for the 2026–2027 cold season, according to a draft government decision finalized by the Ministry of Energy.

The government makes this decision in response to higher consumption during the 2025–2026 winter and amends a 2022 decision by raising the previous threshold from 50 million m³ to 56.3 million m³. The state-owned company Energocom will build up the reserves by October 1, 2026.

Authorities note that the Republic of Moldova does not operate its own natural gas storage facilities and stores its security reserves in depots in Romania, Ukraine, and other European Union and Energy Community states. These reserves cover roughly 10 days of consumption during the cold season.

The authorities keep security stocks separate from commercial stocks and allow their use only in exceptional situations, based on decisions by the competent authorities. During the 2025–2026 cold season, commercial stocks almost fully covered peak demand without affecting strategic reserves.
