In the Ciocana sector of Chisinau, Mircea cel Bătrân (Mircea the Elder) Alley stretches approximately 2.5 km long and 28 meters wide. Once a gloomy area with an impassable sidewalk, broken benches, neglected trees, and no color, the alley now serves as a vibrant meeting place for residents of the sector—and beyond.
The municipality revitalized the alley through a major rehabilitation project launched in 2020. Renovation proceeded in stages, starting with repairing pedestrian access, replacing the asphalt on the main alley, and creating a bike lane.
Authorities then built children’s areas, sports zones, and youth recreational spaces complete with free internet. They renovated the protective fence, landscaped green spaces, planted trees and flowers, and most importantly, installed urban furniture including benches, trash bins, and dedicated bike parking areas.
The alley now features night and decorative lighting, a modern irrigation system, and about 40 video surveillance cameras, which help residents feel safe. Over the years, the system allowed authorities to quickly identify vandals who destroyed public property.
Children and adults enjoy the swings, including a 12-person swing complex near the intersection with Petru Zadnipru Street.
The municipality hosts themed fairs throughout the year, and in winter, the alley welcomes memorable concerts, with Santa Claus as a special guest.
Recently, city authorities approved the largest urban road infrastructure project in Chisinau, which includes the expansion and modernization of bd. Mircea cel Bătrân (Mircea the Elder), Mesager Street, and Industriala Street, along with the development of green corridors.
