Party of Action and Solidarity does not support the initiative to reduce the number of deputies in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. Party leader and Speaker Igor Grosu made the statement, sharply criticizing the proposal put forward by the opposition.

According to Grosu, the idea of reducing the number of MPs represents “cheap populism,” arguing that such proposals serve more as distractions than real solutions for improving parliamentary activity.

The Speaker stressed that discussions should rely on concrete analysis rather than populist messaging. He proposed conducting a comparative study between the Republic of Moldova and other countries with similar populations, including those in the Western Balkans, to properly assess parliamentary representation.

“We need to see how other unicameral or bicameral parliaments function and reach a well-founded conclusion,” Grosu said.

Meanwhile, Vice Speaker Vlad Batrîncea proposed reducing the number of deputies from 101 to 61 by registering a draft constitutional law. He argued that Moldova no longer needs such a large number of MPs given the country’s significant population decline.
