The Moldovan Presidency has reacted to an initiative by parliamentary opposition parties to suspend President Maia Sandu from office, saying that the head of state will continue her mandate.
In a statement to IPN, the Presidency said Maia Sandu had received the support of more than 930,000 citizens to maintain peace and security in Moldova and to ensure the country’s European development path.
“President Maia Sandu will continue the mandate entrusted to her by the citizens, including to protect the constitutional order, democracy and the freedom of all,” representatives of the Presidency said.
Parliament Speaker and PAS leader Igor Grosu also reacted following a press conference attended by representatives of several opposition parties, including those led by Vladimir Voronin, Igor Dodon, Ion Chicu, Ion Ceban, Alexandr Costiuc and Renato Usatîi.
Grosu said the opposition had not united to condemn Russian drones, find solutions for cheaper gas, or advance Moldova’s European integration.
“They united to remove President Maia Sandu,” Grosu said.
He further stated that seeking to remove Sandu from office meant disregarding the will of the Moldovan people.
“To want to remove Maia Sandu means to disregard the will of the people and to submit only to Russia’s interests,” Igor Grosu declared.
The initiative to suspend the president, signed by 46 members of Parliament, was registered with the Parliamentary Secretariat on Tuesday, September 29. The initiative was announced by MP Ion Chicu.
