The Russians announce a month of maneuvers in Transnistria. Chisinau warns of possible unintended consequences

Russian troops on the left bank of the Dniester River announce that they will conduct maneuvers in the region for a month. The Political Bureau for Reintegration notes that on the evening of 16 May 2024, the Joint Military Command received a notification about the planned exercises from 17 May to 17 June 2024.

According to a statement issued by the Bureau, Russian troops plan to conduct “maneuvers to verify by movement the capabilities of the armored technique stationed at the pacification posts. A few hours after the Joint Control Commission meeting concluded, where they did not discuss the subject, they made the announcement.”

“The Moldovan delegation condemns such “initiatives” which are inappropriate in the context of the regional security situation and abusive, given that they did not obtain the approval of the Joint Control Commission. The demonstrative and repeated recourse to such uncoordinated actions is further evidence of a brutal violation of the principles of the Dniester peacekeeping mission,” the Bureau notes.
