In the Botanica sector of Chisinau, the city created a square to honor the victims of the Chernobyl disaster. It sits next to Valea Trandafirilor Park, on land that during the communist period hosted the “Lenin City Park of Culture and Leisure.”
Once abandoned and dangerous, the city transformed the square into a pleasant place for relaxation and a symbol of collective memory. More than 3,500 Moldovans participated in interventions at the affected Chernobyl zone, including active military personnel, officers mobilized by military commissariats, reservists, and civilians. Only about 1,800 of them survived.
City authorities began landscaping the square in 2021. They installed the Monument to the Victims of the Chernobyl Disaster and placed commemorative stones engraved with the names of Moldovans who worked on the nuclear disaster cleanup in 1986. The city modernized the area with paved walkways, a high-performance lighting system, urban furniture, and surveillance cameras to ensure a safe and relaxing environment for visitors.
