The U.S. Department of State confirmed it canceled a $6 million grant to support Moldova’s wine and tourism industries. This decision is part of broader cuts to foreign aid imposed by the Trump administration, as outlined on the State Department’s official website, IPN reported.
Officials in Chisinau declined to comment, noting the decision stems from an earlier action by the Trump administration.
In January 2025, President Donald Trump signed an order freezing all foreign assistance programs, including those managed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), for 90 days. This measure halted several ongoing projects, including those involving Moldova.

In March 2025, the administration announced plans to dismantle USAID and transfer its functions to the State Department by July 1, 2025. Officials justified this restructuring by reducing government spending and realigning foreign aid with domestic priorities.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean responded to the decision at the time, affirming the strength of Moldova–U.S. relations. “There will indeed be a limited financial and timing impact,” Recean said, “but we remain confident that the United States is a reliable partner of the Republic of Moldova, and Moldova lies within the U.S.’s strategic interests on the European continent.”
