The Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations has stated that the sentencing of Eugenia Gutul, Governor of Gagauzia, is an internal matter of the Republic of Moldova. The clarification was made by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, during a press briefing, as reported by Ziarul National.
“This issue should be resolved by the Moldovan judicial system,” said Haq, emphasizing the UN’s stance of non-interference in domestic legal proceedings.
Eugenia Gutul, a member of the former Shor Party, was sentenced to seven years in prison on Tuesday, August 5, for her role in the illegal financing of the party and for accepting illicit funds totaling approximately 42.5 million lei.

In the same case, Svetlana Popan, secretary of the Shor Party’s central office, was also convicted and received a six-year prison sentence.
The court further ruled the confiscation of:
- 40.9 million lei from Eugenia Gutul;
- 9.7 million lei from Svetlana Popan;
- 5.8 million lei in seized cash, along with two mobile phones recovered during searches.
The ruling underscores Moldova’s efforts to crack down on political corruption and illegal party financing, as part of broader reforms aligned with the country’s European integration path.
