Top 3 import products that bring the most money to the budget

In the first half of 2024, the Customs Service reported state budget revenues exceeding 17.7 billion lei, an increase of over 8% compared to the same period last year. VAT held the largest share, at over 67%, followed by excise tax at 26% and customs duty at 6%, according to Moldstreet.

According to data published by the Customs Service, budget revenues from VAT applied to imports amounted to 11.9 billion lei, while excise taxes brought in 4.6 billion lei. The top import products that carry the most money to the state budget are petroleum products, tobacco products, and vehicles.

The top excisable products with the best impact on the state treasury are petroleum products, accounting for over 39% of revenues. From January to June 2024, petroleum products contributed 1.82 billion lei.

After the war in Ukraine that caused logistical stagnation, tobacco imports began to stabilize, becoming an important source of revenue. From January to June 2024, tobacco product imports increased state budget revenues by over 44% compared to the first six months of 2023, amounting to approximately 1.6 billion lei. The share of excise-generated revenues exceeds 34%.

In third place are vehicles, contributing approximately 953 million lei to the state budget. These registered a significant increase of over 37.8% and accounted for 20.6% of total excise revenues.

The list of products contributing to the state budget from excise duties also includes liquefied gases, beer, spirits, and other goods. Last year, during the same period, the Customs Service reported state budget revenues amounting to 16.3 billion lei. The top three excisable products that brought in the most money to the budget were, as in this year, petroleum products, tobacco, and vehicles.
