Since 2019, Moldovan citizens have been able to travel to Turkey with their identity cards without needing a passport. However, after Chisinau introduced new document models, the authorities in Ankara will receive official notification. Officials in Chisinau will send them the specimen, and only then will travelers be able to use the new documents to enter Turkey.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) provided these clarifications at the request of IPN. Diplomats specified that both adults and minors will be able to use the new identity cards for travel. If a child doesn’t have an identity card, they must use a passport to travel. Authorities will not authorize border crossing based on a birth certificate.
At the same time, the MFA officials clarify that the national identity card grants the right to enter and exit Turkey, but it does not guarantee access to domestic services. For hotel accommodation, currency exchange, or interaction with local authorities, Moldovan citizens must comply with local laws and present the documents required by the authorities in Ankara.
