The U.S. government has approved a project to build the Straseni-Gutinas electricity transmission line and will allocate $130 million for its construction.

The new line will connect Moldova with Romania and, through Romania, with the European electricity grid.

The project is expected to strengthen Moldova’s electricity network and increase the country’s capacity to import and export electricity. The line is estimated to be around 190 kilometers long, with approximately 70 kilometers located on Moldovan territory.

“Once completed, the project will strengthen Moldova’s energy independence by ensuring a reliable supply of electricity from European markets,” the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau said.

In addition to energy infrastructure, the U.S. investment is expected to create opportunities for American companies. They could supply technologies in several areas, including electricity transmission, grid optimization, information and communications technology, nuclear energy and battery storage.

“The project will create significant opportunities for U.S. companies, allowing Moldova to adopt and use American technologies,” the U.S. side said.

The Straseni-Gutinas line is expected to become the third 400-kilovolt interconnection between Moldova and Romania, following the Vulcanesti-Chisinau and Balti-Suceava projects.
