Acting Education Minister Dan Perciun has confirmed that he had a disagreement with outgoing Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, saying the dispute stemmed from provisions included in Moldova’s fiscal and budget policy.

According to Perciun, the discussion took place on Tuesday. He said he told the prime minister “what I think” about measures that “had not been fully discussed” before being included in the fiscal package.

“I have always believed that when you have an opinion, you should express it. I did the same with previous prime ministers, including Natalia Gavrilita and Dorin Recean. I also do it in discussions with the president. One of the defining features of the Party of Action and Solidarity and our organizational culture is open discussion and debate. Even if that sometimes means challenging someone’s opinion,” Perciun said.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation on July 3. Later that day, President Maia Sandu said during a press conference that Munteanu had disagreements with Perciun.

Sandu is scheduled to begin consultations with parliamentary parties on Monday to nominate a new candidate for prime minister. Until a new government is appointed, Munteanu will continue serving as acting prime minister.
