Dorian Istratii, a deputy from the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), stated that the designation of Alexandru Vornicu as the party’s prospective candidate for Mayor of Chisinau remains, at this stage, a political decision that still requires formal validation through internal party procedures.
Istratii explained that PAS views the decision as political rather than legal and that it will take effect only when the 2027 local electoral campaign officially begins.
“We have assessed that this is our candidate for the local elections,” Istratii said, noting that the decision was supported by the Permanent Bureau of the PAS Chisinau Municipal Organisation.
According to him, the party’s Municipal Convention, scheduled for the end of July, will bring together around 1,080 members who will vote to confirm the leadership of the municipal organisation and, indirectly, the candidate for the Chisinau mayoral race.
“We have free and fair elections. More people can run. It is natural for the president of the Municipal Organisation to also be the candidate for mayor,” he added.
Istratii also commented on Vornicu’s statements regarding potential succession plans in Stauceni, saying the remarks were understandable given his strong local electoral support. He noted that residents had previously backed Vornicu with 77% of the vote and would likely support continuity in local governance, even if he later assumes a broader role in Chisinau.
On June 15, PAS Chisinau officially announced its intention to propose Vornicu as its candidate for Mayor of Chisinau in the 2027 elections and expressed support for his leadership of the PAS Chisinau municipal organisation.
