(VIDEO) Emmanuel Macron, interview for Bridges to Europe: Moldova’s choice is simple – Russian or European model

On October 20, during the presidential elections and the republican constitutional referendum, Moldova faces a simple choice—embrace the Russian model or choose the European model. This is the opinion of French President Emmanuel Macron, who gave an exclusive interview with journalist Ecaterina Covali, author of “Bridges to Europe.” The production will air on Thursday, October 17, on RLIVE TV.

Macron explained why the European Union is the best option for Moldova.

“First and foremost, I have always respected the sovereignty of nations and the free will of citizens who must make their own decisions. I believe this is an opportunity. When I look at Moldova and the region, the choice is clear—Moldova will either move toward a Russian or a European model. I’ve simplified the situation, but that’s the reality. The Russian model often prompts repeated questioning.

The European model’s beauty lies in asking the people, which is democracy. It is an incredible opportunity, and I fully recognize the significance of this election.

I believe that the upcoming ballot is crucial for Moldova’s future. And as a convinced European, not as the President of France, but as a convinced European, especially here, speaking with you and respecting the sovereignty of the Moldovan people, I hope that they will choose the path of Europe because it is the path of freedom and democracy,” said the President of France.

We want to emphasize that during France’s presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2022, Chisinau came remarkably close to the EU, marking a new chapter in its European history.

“I think the process has benefited Moldova because it has allowed freedom of movement and visa facilitation. In even more concrete terms, I would give the example of the telecommunications and network integration cost. It is one of the agreements concretized during the European Political Community in Moldova. Roaming charges were liberalized thanks to the involvement of operators.

It is followed by a series of concrete cooperation projects, investments, increased economic openness, and the freedom of movement mentioned, along with collaboration in combating cyber attacks and disinformation,” concluded Emmanuel Macron.

In recent years, the EU has provided significant support to Moldova during its most challenging moments, including responding to Gazprom’s energy blackmail, offering financial assistance in the fight against corruption and disinformation, fostering economic development, opening doors for exports, and sanctioning hate-mongers within the country. However, the strongest support provided is the launch of EU accession negotiations.

The interview was part of the “Bridges to Europe” project, funded by the Soros Foundation Moldova in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova and implemented by the Association for Responsible Initiatives (ASPIR).

The production also airs on the public TV channel Moldova 1.
