Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu urged citizens to monitor whether mayors are embezzling funds from the “European Village” project, stating that each such crime endangers the public.
His comments came amid arrests in a major corruption case, with five individuals detained for 72 hours on February 23 following multiple searches.
“Unfortunately, there are still individuals who believe they are untouchable and can steal public money. Until recently, only the Penal Code provided punishments for embezzlement, but now we have also introduced a sanction for the embezzlement of European funds. (…) Dear villagers, keep an eye on them. Any money stolen from roads, gas pipelines, and so on puts you, the residents and beneficiaries of these investments, in danger,” Grosu said.
Infrastructure Minister Vladimir Bolea welcomed the CNA’s actions, adding, “We cannot fix a flawed system overnight, but we have the obligation to make it function properly.”
