(VIDEO) Maia Sandu’s Response to Patrushev: Here, People Are Free and Not Persecuted Like in Russia

Nikolai Patrushev’s statements about the “disappearance of Moldova” show disrespect for state borders and international law, said Maia Sandu. The President stated on TVR Moldova that such remarks have been made before by the Kremlin, calling them “irresponsible.”

During the „Punctul pe azi” program, Sandu reiterated that the country is safe. She also pointed to the persecution in Russia against those who oppose the Kremlin’s administration.

“We’ve seen similar irresponsible statements from other Kremlin representatives. These declarations aim to frighten people and stir dissatisfaction among citizens toward the authorities. (…) We are safe and will remain so. The Russian army is far from Moldova’s borders. We are a peaceful country. We make our own decisions and should not be intimidated. Here, people are free and not persecuted like in Russia.

It reflects a lack of respect for international law, for a state’s borders, and, in general, for people who live freely, are brave, defend their dignity, and choose how they want to live,” Maia Sandu declared.

In mid-January, Nikolai Patrushev, the former head of the Federal Security Service and advisor to the Kremlin leader, threatened Moldova with “disappearance.” In an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda, Patrushev claimed that Moldova risks ceasing to exist if it continues to pursue anti-Russian policies.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’s representatives emphasized that “such statements constitute an unacceptable interference in our country’s internal affairs and aim to destabilize the region. The Republic of Moldova is a sovereign state, firmly committed to democracy and European integration, in line with the will of its citizens.”
