(VIDEO) Moldova Strengthens Ties with Lithuania During Official Visit Focused on Security, Reforms, and EU Integration

Moldova deepened its strategic partnership with Lithuania during today’s official visit of Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to European values, regional security, and democratic reform.

President Maia Sandu welcomed Prime Minister Paluckas to Chisinau and praised Lithuania’s consistent support for Moldova’s European integration. She emphasized in a press conference the value of Vilnius’ experience as an EU member:

“Lithuania remains a reliable ally in our efforts to align with EU standards and join the European family,” said Sandu.

The two leaders focused their discussions on expanding bilateral cooperation in areas such as energy, security, and economic development—particularly in the context of Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and growing hybrid threats in the region. They agreed to intensify trade relations and explore new economic opportunities.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean hosted a joint press conference with his Lithuanian counterpart, where both officials strongly condemned Russia’s aggression and stressed the importance of regional resilience. Recean underscored the historical bond between the two nations:

“The Moldovan people admired and supported Lithuania’s national liberation movement in the late 1980s, and Moldova became the first country to recognize Lithuania’s independence in spring 1990,” he stated.

To honor that shared history, Recean presented Paluckas with a copy of Moldova’s original parliamentary decision recognizing Lithuania’s independence—a document preserved in the National Archives.

Recean also outlined how Lithuania continues to support Moldova through tangible development projects:

“Lithuania has supported Moldova’s European path for many years and continues to help through concrete projects in green energy, agriculture, institutional strengthening, and security,” he explained.

He detailed several of these initiatives, including solar panel installations in public institutions across regions like Ocnita, Cantemir, Comrat, and Ceadir-Lunga; modern equipment for the Border Police and armed forces; and expert assistance for key institutions like the National Bank and Competition Council. Recean also noted the growth in bilateral trade, which increased by over 25% in the past year.

Prime Minister Paluckas reaffirmed Lithuania’s commitment to Moldova’s EU aspirations:

“Lithuania will continue to share its expertise and support Moldova in implementing reforms and fulfilling its European ambitions,” he said.

The visit underscored a strong, enduring partnership built on shared values and demonstrated both countries’ determination to cooperate for peace, security, and a united Europe.
