(VIDEO) Moldova to Guarantee €400 Million EBRD Loan for Natural Gas Purchases

The Government of the Republic of Moldova will provide a state guarantee for an external loan of up to €400 million, contracted by Energocom from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Dorian Istratii, Vice President of the Parliamentary Economic, Budget, and Finance Committee, announced it during an appearance on Rezoomat on RliveTV.

The loan, granted for a five-year term, will fund natural gas purchases under the “Strengthening Energy Security in the Republic of Moldova” project, according to IPN.

“Energocom needs sufficient liquidity to buy natural gas on the market before selling it to consumers,” Istratii explained. “To secure these purchases, the company must obtain funding. The EBRD is willing to offer support but requires assurances of the company’s future stability. That’s why the government is stepping in to guarantee that Energocom will fulfill its obligations and operate transparently.”

Istratii reassured that citizens’ ability to pay for gas is not at risk, highlighting that 95% of monthly payments are collected without issues.

“There is no scenario where Energocom can’t repay the loan. It receives funds directly from gas consumers. Given the high collection rate, repayment will not be a problem,” the MP stated.

According to the project’s technical note, the credit will be issued in three installments as a revolving loan:

  • Installment I: €170 million
  • Installment II: €80 million
  • Installment III: €50 million
