A state of alert in the energy sector was introduced in the Republic of Moldova on July 28. While some lawmakers consider the measure necessary, others are demanding concrete actions from Prime Minister Vasile Tofan.
Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said that several fuel vessels carrying diesel are already entering the Giurgiulești International Free Port. He added that Kazakhstan and Romania have identified solutions to resume fuel supplies to refineries across the Prut River.
“We have to look at the situation in a broader context. There are solutions being found, and fuel supplies are being restored,” Grosu said, noting that authorities are monitoring developments.
Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers criticized the government’s decision, arguing that the authorities need to provide clearer explanations regarding the reasons behind the energy alert.
Opposition representatives called on Prime Minister Vasile Tofan to present the situation in Parliament and explain why the measure was necessary. They also criticized the government’s priorities, saying that “paying for T-shirts and speaking English” are not the measures the country needs during an energy crisis.
The government introduced the 30-day state of alert in the energy sector and hydrological sector on July 28 amid concerns over fuel supplies, declining diesel stocks, and the low water level of the Dniester River. The measures include creating mandatory fuel reserves and possible restrictions on diesel exports and re-exports.
