(VIDEO) Parliament accepted Recean’s request! From December 16 we have a state of emergency in the energy sector

The Republic of Moldova will establish a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days starting December 16, 2024. After hours of debates, the parliamentary majority accepted Prime Minister Dorin Recean’s request. Fifty-six MPs passed the draft resolution to declare a state of emergency.

The decision comes against the backdrop of risks to Moldova’s energy security and possible humanitarian effects on the left bank of the Dniester, according to representatives of the cabinet of ministers. The potential crisis, starting from January 1, 2025, could be generated by the cessation of the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after the expiration of the de rigueur agreement.

During the state of emergency, the Commission for Exceptional Situations could adopt urgent measures to allocate financial resources and coordinate the necessary actions to secure energy resources and overcome the humanitarian consequences.

“This winter must be the last in the country’s history when energy threats can endanger us. We ended gas blackmail on the right bank, and we will overcome energy blackmail once we complete the Chisinau-Vulcanesti high-voltage line,” said Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

The Kyiv administration may reject the contract extension, while Moscow urges Moldovan authorities to reach an agreement with Ukrainian officials. Former Energy Minister Victor Parlicov revealed that Gazprom chief Alexei Miller conveyed this message to him in St. Petersburg.
