On the day of the parliamentary elections, the President of Romania, Nicusor Dan, together with several Romanian Members of the European Parliament, sent messages of support to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. They stressed the historic importance of the vote and urged Moldovans to participate in large numbers.
NICUSOR DAN, President of Romania:
“It is a decisive day for the Republic of Moldova, and I urge all Basarabians in Romania—you know where the polling stations are—to go and vote. It is extremely, extremely important. I would even say it is a historic day for the Republic of Moldova.”
EUGEN TOMAC, Member of the European Parliament:
“Today I voted for the second Romanian state, the Republic of Moldova, to continue on its European path and to become a member of the European Union. I hope that most Moldovan citizens will support this goal, because the alternative is for the country to once again become a province of the Russian Empire, which I do not want to see happen. I appeal to people to go and vote, because these elections are unprecedented and the stakes are enormous.

Tonight, after 21:00, we will know whether the citizens of the Republic of Moldova want a common future with Romania in the European Union, or whether they will once again, through democratic means, turn toward Russia. In 1940, no one asked the Romanians across the Prut River if they wanted to become citizens of the USSR. Others forced it upon them. Today, however, democratic citizens vote freely in an unprecedented election that invites them to define their choice.”
NICOLAE STEFANUTA, Member of the European Parliament:
“Today’s elections are crucial, not just important, because if Moldova ends up with a Russian-controlled government in Chisinau, its European path will stop. It is such a unique moment—when the European Union can, the European Union wants, Moldova can, and Moldova wants. I do not know if we will ever have such a historic opportunity again. That is why it is essential that everyone goes out to vote, because tomorrow may be too late for Moldova’s European accession.”
ION COSER, Consul General of the Republic of Moldova in Iasi:
“I voted for the economic development of the Republic of Moldova, I voted for a prosperous country, for a Moldova respected and recognized worldwide, with true friends at its side.”
In total, authorities opened more than 2,700 polling stations for the parliamentary elections on September 28, and they set up 301 of them outside the Republic of Moldova.
