A rally marking four years since the start of the war was organized by Amnesty International in front of the Russian Embassy in the Republic of Moldova. The organization stated that since the beginning of Russia aggression, it has documented attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, illegal detentions, torture, forced deportations, and other crimes that require investigation and accountability under international law.
Representatives of Amnesty International Moldova said that in the occupied territories the population is subjected to repression, while children are indoctrinated and stripped of their identity. They also reiterated the need to enforce the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court, including those against Vladimir Putin and other Russian officials.
During the rally, participants called for full accountability for all war crimes and crimes against humanity, with no impunity and no territorial compromises affecting Ukraine.
“Today marks four years since Russia full scale invasion of Ukraine, but we must not forget that the war began in 2014 with the illegal annexation of Crimea, and the events of 2022 were the result of impunity for the crimes committed in 2014. It is important that in negotiations mediated by the United States all of Ukraine demands and positions are taken into account. Human rights must be part of these negotiations, and the warrants issued against Vladimir Putin and other Russian officials must be respected and enforced by the International Criminal Court. Without this, and without punishing war criminals, we cannot speak of a just peace,” said Veaceslav Tofan, Executive Director of Amnesty International Moldova.
“It is essential that all crimes committed are documented and officially recognized. Victims have the right to justice, and perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity must be held accountable before international courts. Russia must also ensure full reparations for the damage caused, including lost lives, deportations, torture, and the loss of homes and livelihoods. Without truth, justice, and compensation for victims, there can be no lasting peace,” said Iulia Nazaria, Campaign Coordinator at Amnesty International Moldova.
During the event, the organization promoted a petition calling on authorities and the international community to take urgent action to protect Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians held in captivity and to end crimes committed against them.
