On Friday, April 5, 2024, the rescuers and firefighters of the Republic of Moldova celebrate the professional holiday “Rescuer’s Day.” In this context, an official ceremony dedicated to the employees of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (GIES) was held on the premises of the institution. The event began with a divine service dedicated to the heroes who passed away in the line of duty and continued with a solemn ceremony to honor the staff.
The official ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu, the Minister of Internal Affairs Adrian Efros, the GIES leadership, and its veterans.
In her congratulatory message, the head of state Maia Sandu thanked the GIES for all the national and international missions carried out by the rescuers and firefighters, for the human lives that have been saved, and for the efforts and sacrifices made every day.
“You are true heroes or heroines and each of you deserves the respect and appreciation of the whole society for the efforts and sacrifices you make day after day, and our appreciation must be expressed not only today but every day. I thank your parents, who have raised people with empathy and love for others, people with a desire to help others,” Maia Sandu told those gathered at the ceremony.

The Minister of Interior Affairs Adrian Efros also came with a congratulatory message, thanking for the lives saved in difficult missions.
“Today is an occasion of pride and joy to honor the lives of over 2,296 people saved last year alone and over 600 this year. GIES has become the focal point for the application and activation under the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. From this position, we will have to adapt the internal legislation and adjust all processes to European standards. We do this as a full member within this mechanism and thus contribute to this country’s project to become a member state of the European Union”, Adrian Efros stressed.
As a sign of gratitude and high appreciation, the officials awarded several firefighters and rescuers with State Honors: “Faith to the Motherland” class I and II, as well as the State Distinction “Civic Merit” Medal, Diplomas of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, special ranks, Distinctions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and GIES.
The official ceremony ended with the laying of flowers at the memorial to the Eternal Glory of the fallen Heroes of the Rescuers and Firefighters.
Employees of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations are on duty 24 hours a day. Their mission is to save lives, prevent risky situations, and liquidate the consequences of exceptional situations.
