There is a risk that the Republic of Moldova could become a transit zone for weapons and ammunition after the war in Ukraine ends, Serghei Diaconu said. He made the statement during the “7 zile” program on Cinema 1, noting that authorities are working with partners to identify measures and prevent this risk.

According to Serghei Diaconu, the dialogue involved the National Security Council of Moldova, the Security and Intelligence Service of Moldova, and the Border Police of the Republic of Moldova. He emphasized the need to strengthen border capacities and ensure the availability of necessary equipment, including large scanners to detect smuggling.

Serghei Diaconu said, “We must improve prevention in areas controlled by state authorities because, ultimately, we will act as a security barrier until we join the European Union. We receive EU support to strengthen our capacities and filter risks. Our interest is not only to ensure better internal protection for our citizens and their property, but also to prevent the transfer or movement of weapons to other parts of Europe. We are focusing on this issue, we understand the risks, and we are working to integrate them into a comprehensive counteraction program.”

Authorities previously discovered a truck carrying smuggled weapons at the Albita Border Crossing in November 2025 and opened a criminal case. Later, Radu Vrabie, head of Customs, stated on TV8 that such crimes have reportedly occurred since 2023.
