Moldova’s Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) chief Alexandru Musteata has issued a pessimistic assessment of the country’s prospects amid increasingly frequent Russian attacks near the Moldovan-Ukrainian border. According to the official, there are currently no indications that the war in neighboring Ukraine will end anytime soon.
In an interview with journalist Nicolae Chicu, Musteata said Moldova is heavily interconnected with Ukraine’s infrastructure, meaning the country could face a number of challenges during the cold season.
“We must be aware that we should expect some fairly complicated developments. As a service, at least, we are preparing for the most difficult scenarios. Again, that is our job. We have to do it. (…) We need to prepare because Ukraine’s energy sector has been heavily affected. We are highly interconnected with Ukraine in the electricity and energy sector. And the costs of energy resources are very high. We do not expect them to decrease anytime soon. We need to prepare for a more intense winter,” Musteata said.
Russian attacks on Ukraine have intensified in recent weeks, while incidents involving drones flying through the airspace of Moldova and Romania have also become increasingly frequent.
