The constitutional referendum on Moldova’s accession to the EU is necessary to ensure that future governments, which may not be pro-European, cannot seamlessly reverse the process. It is the opinion and explanation of PAS MP Olesea Stamate, a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Appointments, and Immunities, expressed on the “Puterea A Patra” show on N4, on the evening of Wednesday, September 18.
“Nothing in the world is irreversible, but we want to make it hard for anyone to reverse this process. The opposition has asked why we do not consult the citizens, so we are doing just that to end such debates about whether there is a majority. We should understand the citizens’ views and stay committed to our path toward the EU. Examining the progress of countries that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007, we see that their political debates, although sometimes intense, like in Moldova, did not cast doubt on their geopolitical direction. This unity helped them greatly. When society is unified, any government, whether today or in the future, will work to maintain this direction,” explained Olesea Stamate.

In the same broadcast, the deputy also expressed hope that the law enforcement and electoral bodies would effectively perform their duties and prevent any attempts to manipulate voter opinions or, especially, instances of corruption. She emphasized her desire for a favorable outcome.
The constitutional referendum regarding the EU will happen on October 20, 2024, alongside the presidential elections. The Central Electoral Commission has registered four candidates: Maia Sandu, Alexandr Stoianoglo, Renato Usatii, and Vasile Tarlev.
