(VIDEO) The President of the European Council in Chisinau: The EU and Moldova will continue to firmly advocate for peace

The European Union and the Republic of Moldova will continue to advocate firmly for peace, working side by side to shape this common future on their own terms without interference. The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, made these statements during their joint press conference in Chisinau.

According to European officials, no one desires peace more than Ukrainians, and the EU supports efforts to achieve lasting peace, which means more than just a ceasefire. What is happening now in Ukraine is not only Ukraine’s problem but concerns the security of Europe as a whole, IPN reports.

”Moldova is experiencing a defining moment in its path toward the European Union that will profoundly shape its generations’ future. Moldova has chosen its European future and has already demonstrated its commitment to democracy, freedom, and a better life for its children,” noted the President of the European Council.

According to Antonio Costa, some are attempting to undermine Moldova’s path toward prosperity and stability by using energy blackmail, fake news, and hybrid attacks. However, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova have stood firm and reaffirmed their choice—the European path of the country—confirming this in the referendum held a few months ago. At the same time, the EU has already demonstrated that it stands with Moldovan citizens in times of challenges and crises, being a reliable and predictable partner.

Antonio Costa emphasized that the EU is a project of peace, which means that security and defense must be a priority because peace without defense is merely an illusion. For this reason, on March 6, he will urge the European Council to approve a concrete decision to enhance defense capabilities.

”We will join efforts to support Ukraine and all European countries in defending our project— the project of peace,” stated Antonio Costa.

The European official also mentioned that the EU has established the European Peace Facility, an instrument designed to support the defense capabilities of various countries. Moldova is the second-largest beneficiary of this peace instrument.

”There are currently €37 million allocated to strengthen defense capabilities in the Republic of Moldova. And in 2025, we will provide an additional €60 million. Investments in defense are not meant to provoke war but to ensure peace,” added the President of the European Council.

For her part, President Maia Sandu stated that Moldova’s security is no longer just a matter of domestic policy but is part of a common European effort. In a world marked by insecurity, hybrid threats, cyberattacks, and disinformation campaigns, Moldova is strengthening its resilience with the support of the European Union.

”We were the first country to sign a Strategic Partnership for Security and Defense with the European Union. We are modernizing our army with European support from the European Peace Facility. Within the EU Partnership Mission in Moldova, Moldovan and European experts are working together to counter external interference and strengthen security not only in our country but across Europe,” the head of state emphasized.
