The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) will not vote in favor of the government led by Prime Minister-designate Vasile Tofan, socialist MP Grigore Novac said.
Speaking on Realitatea TV’s “Rezoomat” programme, Novac criticized the proposed composition of the future Cabinet and said the party plans to question Tofan during the parliamentary hearing.
“Definitely not, because we understand what comes next. We will ask a series of questions, which have already been prepared. We want to see what the prime minister promises regarding Moldova’s future and how he views the country’s European path,” Novac said.
The socialist lawmaker also criticized the current government team, arguing that Moldova’s EU accession process cannot advance with the same group of ministers.
“We have seen the opening of several clusters, but he must understand that with the current lineup of ministers, we do not see the European Union even in 2050,” Novac added.
The statement comes after Vasile Tofan held consultations with current ministers and announced that decisions on the composition of his government team would follow. The prime minister-designate also said consultations with political parties and representatives from various sectors would continue as he finalizes the government programme.
Tofan’s government will request a vote of confidence from Parliament on Tuesday, July 21. He was nominated for the position of prime minister by President Maia Sandu after consultations with parliamentary factions.
Under Moldova’s legislation, the government is approved by a majority vote of elected MPs. After the vote, the president signs the decree appointing the Cabinet.
Former Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation on July 3 after around eight months in office, saying he could no longer perform his duties in line with his principles and convictions.
