(VIDEO) Trump Imposes 31% Tariffs on Moldovan Imports: Dorin Recean Pledges Support for Exporters

The United States announced a massive increase in customs tariffs for most imported products, including those from the Republic of Moldova, with a 31% tax. Authorities will implement the measures in two stages: a 10% base tariff will apply starting April 5, while additional tariffs will take effect on April 9. The list of additional tariffs does not include Russia and Mexico.

Official data shows that in 2024, the Republic of Moldova exported goods worth $136.5 million to the U.S., representing 2.32% of Moldova’s total exports, according to bani.md.
Economic experts warn that this tax could reduce the competitiveness of Moldovan goods in the U.S. market, especially in the wine, textile, and electronic component sectors—industries that have experienced steady growth in recent years.

This measure emerges in a sensitive geopolitical context and may serve as a political signal.

In response, the Government of the Republic of Moldova will assist Moldovan entrepreneurs in exporting to the United States, although the specific support measures remain unclear. Prime Minister Dorin Recean announced this decision while commenting on the U.S. tariff increase for Moldovan products.

“As we have seen, the United States decided to impose tariffs on 70 countries, including the Republic of Moldova, to balance trade policies affecting the U.S. This affects approximately 2.5% of Moldova’s foreign trade. We recognize the concerns of our producers, who have worked consistently to access the American market, and the Government will intervene to help these entrepreneurs maintain their competitiveness.

The Republic of Moldova remains firmly committed to a strategic partnership with the U.S. This partnership has lasted for over 30 years, and we are confident that we will continue aligning with our shared objectives,” stated the Prime Minister.

During the same conference, the Prime Minister urged Moldovans to purchase and consume local products.

“What is equally important to mention is that 3 out of 4 products exported from our country go to the large European family. (…) I want to call on all citizens to support local products,” concluded Dorin Recean.
