Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, visits Moldova from February 12–13, 2025, marking 30 years of Moldova’s membership in the Council of Europe. The visit coincides with the launch of the new 2025–2028 Action Plan for Moldova.
High-Level Meetings
Berset met with President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Dorin Recean, and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu. Sandu highlighted, “Democracy must be protected every day,” stressing the need for Council of Europe support in combating disinformation and vote buying. Grosu noted that the new Action Plan “proves trust in our potential for transformation.”
Launch of the 2025-2028 Action Plan
The Action Plan, launched on February 12, focuses on key areas like combating disinformation, judicial reform, anti-corruption, and protecting electoral processes. Berset also gave a lecture on disinformation at Moldova State University.
Future Prospects
In 2025, Moldova will assume the presidency of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers. The Action Plan aims to align Moldova’s institutions with European standards in human rights, democracy, and rule of law. It will focus on judicial reform, anti-corruption, media practices, and strengthening cross-border cooperation.
The plan, requiring 30 million euros in funding, continues efforts to support Moldova’s EU accession and democratic development.
