The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Wednesday, October 9, focused on supporting Moldova’s resilience ahead of the upcoming presidential elections and the EU accession referendum scheduled for October 20. MEP Siegfried Muresan made the announcement.
The resolution, adopted by 508 votes in favor, 53 against, and 104 abstentions, vehemently condemns Russia’s attempts at interference and hybrid operations, which have become more aggressive on the eve of the presidential elections and the constitutional referendum in the Republic of Moldova, which will take place on October 20.
“The European Parliament calls for increased European support for the Republic of Moldova in the EU accession process and in combating security risks. We have just voted, by a large majority, on the European Parliament resolution on the situation in the Republic of Moldova. The resolution, which I negotiated on behalf of the PPE Group and co-signed with all the MEPs of the National Liberal Party, is entitled: Strengthening Moldova’s resilience against Russian interference ahead of the upcoming presidential elections and EU referendum,” Muresan’s message reads.

The MEPs highlighted the role of pro-Russian actors, including Moldovan oligarchs and the Russian state-funded Russia Today media group, in carrying out vote fraud, cyber-crime and information warfare schemes. They call on member states to ensure that the Republic of Moldova receives all necessary institution-building assistance to enable the country to face hybrid threats.
