On the International Day of Older Persons, the Realitatea team interviewed several pensioners to learn how they are coping financially.

Most of them admitted that their pensions do not cover daily expenses and said they survive thanks to the support of their children.

“Don’t ask me, it makes me want to cry. Thank God I have a good child who supports me,” one pensioner told Realitatea.

Others, however, said they live more comfortably, with some receiving pensions of over 8,000 or even 10,000 lei.

“There have never been more opportune times. Those who have worked honestly and paid their taxes live well,” another elderly man stated.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, at the beginning of 2025, Moldova had 616,500 people aged 60 and over, representing 25.9% of the population. Women made up 60.2% of this group, with more than 40,000 people over 80 years old. The data also show that households with elderly persons spend nearly half of their expenses on food.
