Parliament must propose solutions to prevent defendants and convicted individuals from avoiding punishment by fleeing to or through the Transnistrian region, President Maia Sandu says. She believes the authorities need an unconventional solution to address this problem.

Speaking in the TV8 studio, the head of state explained that in countries where authorities exercise constitutional control over the entire territory, they can impose travel bans. In the Republic of Moldova, however, the authorities face difficulties because separatist forces administer part of the territory.

“When we have this segment, this region inside the country, where we cannot search for people and find them, we need an unconventional solution. We have already had several such cases. It is clear that we must come up with an unconventional solution for a situation that keeps repeating. Sometimes I think it is the prosecutor’s fault. Other times, it is the judge’s fault,” Maia Sandu said.

In recent months, several individuals convicted in the Republic of Moldova have evaded punishment. They include former police chief Alexandru Pinzari, former MPs Alexandr Nesterovschi and Irina Lozovan, as well as former president of the People’s Assembly Dmitri Constantinov.
