The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, implied on Monday, October 16, in Prague, Czech Republic, that a possible Russian victory over Ukraine would lead to the end of her country as an independent state, as reported by Agerpres.
“If Russia were to triumph, this would probably put an end to the existence of the Republic of Moldova as an independent state,” because it would entail the loss of political and civic freedoms, Sandu said at the opening of the “Forum 2000” in Prague.
After denouncing that the Russian invasion was “aimed at ending the existence of Ukraine as a sovereign state and the Ukrainian people as a nation,” the 51-year-old politician urged allies of Kyiv to prevent Russia’s victory.

Furthermore, in order to strengthen its democracy, the Republic of Moldova hopes to make progress in fully integrating into the European Union (EU), she added.
After decades as part of the former Soviet bloc, it is time for the country with 2.7 million inhabitants to “follow the light at the end of the tunnel and find a safe haven in the EU and strengthen its democracy,” Sandu emphasized.
In March 2022, a few days after the start of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova officially requested EU membership and was granted candidate status the same year.
During her visit to Prague, Sandu is set to meet with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala on Monday.
