The Republic of Moldova and Romania will benefit from nearly 45 million euros under the Connecting Europe Facility for Transport mechanism to improve transport connections along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). In this regard, three grant agreements were signed between the Government of Chișinău and the European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Vălean.
The projects will modernize transport infrastructure at the road border crossing points of Ungheni, Albița-Leușeni, and Reni-Giurgiulești-Galați. These investments will strengthen the EU-Ukraine solidarity corridors – the routes used since Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea for the transportation of exports and imports from Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Vălean, welcomed the agreements: “Thanks to the strong cooperation between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, we can now kick off the implementation phase of three very important projects that will significantly increase capacity and facilitate traffic flows at the border between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Rapid implementation is important because these projects will bring Moldova, a candidate country for the EU, even closer to the EU, offering its citizens and businesses easier and faster access to our internal market.”

On the Romanian side, an 18 km section of the road will be modernized to improve customs services at the Ungheni border crossing point. Moldova will construct a new access road and a new border crossing point. The existing infrastructure on both sides of the Albița-Leușeni border crossing point will be modernized to enhance traffic flow management. In the final project phase, the parking facilities in Giurgiulești will be expanded, and customs control equipment will be procured.
Transport connections between the EU and Moldova were discussed during the meeting on October 26 between Commissioner Vălean and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Dorin Recean.
The European Commission has also launched a new call for proposals in the field of Transport under the CEF, providing over 7 billion euros for rail, inland waterway, maritime, and road infrastructure projects. For the first time, entities from Moldova can directly apply for EU funding under this call, following the signing of the CEF Association Agreement earlier this year.
