Romania firmly supports obtaining a political agreement to open accession negotiations with the European Union for both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, according to the recommendations of the European Commission, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luminița Odobescu, on Monday, as reported by AGERPRES.
The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs participated in the Foreign Affairs Council held in Brussels, where she advocated for the sustained European path of Romania’s neighboring countries.
“The overwhelming majority of member states recognized that this decision is extremely important, especially in the current geopolitical context. We continue diplomatic efforts and discussions to obtain a positive decision at the end of this week, at the European Council in December,” emphasized Luminița Odobescu.
The start of negotiations with Ukraine, according to Minister Odobescu, is a negotiation topic that will be discussed at the highest level by European leaders at the upcoming European Council. She also highlighted Romania’s continued support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova, both politically and practically.
“At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we are in close coordination with our colleagues, providing assistance and support regarding the accession process and training courses. This support will continue, as it is crucial, and the strengthening of the administrative capacity of the Republic of Moldova is one of our common topics of interest to prepare for the launch of accession negotiations, which, although not simple, will be supported by us,” added Luminița Odobescu.
The Minister also emphasized Romania’s perspective, having traveled the European path and understanding the importance of continuing reforms. “Despite the difficulties encountered by Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, both countries have managed to implement significant reforms in a short period, recognized by both the European Commission and the member states. Based on these reforms, the European Commission recommended the opening of accession negotiations,” highlighted the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

She underscored Romania’s commitment to supporting the European path of the Western Balkan states and the Eastern Partnership countries.
“We do not consider that there is competition between the two processes. Both are extremely important for Romania and, obviously, for the European Union. Our commitment is equally strong for Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, and Georgia, as well as for our partners in the Western Balkans. In this difficult security context, the European Union’s presence and its enlargement policy have always demonstrated that they can produce positive results through the sharing of values, reforms, and natural rapprochement, as members of the same family, ultimately within the European Union,” emphasized Luminița Odobescu.
