(VIDEO) The separatists in Tiraspol have banned the term “Transnistria.” A fine of 368 rubles will be imposed on those who refer to the region by this name

The so-called Supreme Council in Tiraspol has voted to ban the term “Transnistria” in the region on the left bank of the Dniester. The region must now be called “Pridnestrovie.”

The separatist authorities threaten individuals who do not comply with the regulations with fines ranging from 184 to 368 rubles. Those in positions of responsibility will face fines of up to 736 rubles, while legal entities could get a fine of up to 9,200 rubles.

The press on the left bank of the Dniester reports that arrest for up to 15 days is also possible if people ignore the new regulations.

The initiative to ban the term “Transnistria” comes from Vadim Krasnoselski. The official in Tiraspol believes that the term may be associated with Nazism from the period of World War II.

The Reintegration Policies Office previously informed Realitatea that the intention is “provocative.” According to the authority’s representatives, such statements are not helpful for the negotiation process.

The officials also noted that the current legislation of the Republic of Moldova uses terms such as “administrative-territorial units/ localities on the left bank of the Dniester and the municipality of Bender,” “eastern districts of the Republic of Moldova,” and “left bank of the Dniester.”
