Ursula von der Leyen’s congratulatory message to Maia Sandu: “You can count on me to move Moldova forward on its path to the European Union”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Maia Sandu on her inauguration as President of the Republic of Moldova.

On social media, von der Leyen emphasized her support for President Maia Sandu on Moldova’s journey toward European Union integration.

“Dear Maia Sandu, congratulations on today’s inauguration. Despite foreign forces working against you, you won fairly. Your integrity and determination inspire us all. You can count on me as Moldova moves forward on its path toward the European Union,” said Ursula von der Leyen.

Maia Sandu took the oath of office, officially becoming Moldova’s President. The inauguration ceremony occurred at the Palace of the Republic in Chisinau.

Sandu became Moldova’s first female president and the sixth in history. She was also the first directly elected president to secure two mandates.

Moldova’s Constitution requires the president to take the oath before Parliament and the Constitutional Court no later than 45 days after the election. The four-year presidential mandate begins on the day the oath is taken.
