Moldova will purchase a state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 75 MW and internal combustion engines (ICE) with a capacity of 22 MW to strengthen the country’s energy security.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Moldova Energy Security Activity Project (MESA), in partnership with the Energy Ministry, launched the tender process for the energy storage system. The first stage focuses on procuring and installing a 30 MW battery system component.
The Energy Ministry expects to sign the contract in the coming weeks and complete the project by September 2026. Workers will install the storage systems at CET-Nord in Balti.

This acquisition aims to improve the reliability of Moldova’s electricity networks, enable energy trade with Romania, Ukraine, and the European market, and support the integration of locally produced renewable energy.
Additionally, the energy storage system will optimize energy management and help Moldelectrica, the national grid operator, maintain network flexibility and stability amid fluctuating electricity demands.
The U.S. Government, through USAID, is funding the project with $85 million as part of over $300 million in assistance announced by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his visit to Chisinau in May 2024 to strengthen Moldova’s energy security.
