Protection, development opportunities, and the opening of new nursery places are just some of the current government’s objectives to encourage Moldovans from the diaspora to return home. In a video statement, Minister of Labor and Social Protection Alexei Buzu said that authorities are making considerable efforts to curb the migration of Moldovan citizens.
“First and foremost, we must ensure that we provide protection, development, and growth opportunities for all citizens in the Republic of Moldova. This government has mobilized significant resources to support and encourage young families. We have invested in nurseries, kindergartens, and education. We have made childcare leave more flexible. We must double our efforts. Through this economic growth program, supported by our friends and partners in the European Union, we will have the resources to open another 5,000 nursery places. It means additional support for young parents in Moldova. And what is very important to us is that we are offering a national project—the European integration process—to align the standard of living with that of the European Union.

Experience shows that if we achieve this in a shorter timeframe, citizens will return, and the emigration rate will slow down. It is also crucial to have programs that involve and support our citizens from the diaspora,” Buzu stated.
In his statement, Buzu gave a concrete example. His ministry has recently hired two new officials, both of whom have returned from the diaspora.
“This includes the Secretary General of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection and a State Secretary. Both have returned from the diaspora to serve their country and work in the public sector,” the minister added.
According to the 2024 census data, Moldova’s population has decreased from 2.7 million in 2014 to 2.4 million in 2024. This figure represents citizens with habitual residence, meaning those who live in the country.
