How Romanians in the Republic of Moldova voted in the Romanian presidential election: Nicusor Dan takes first place

Independent candidate Nicusor Dan received the most votes in the Republic of Moldova during the first round of Romania’s presidential elections, held on May 4. He secured 47,630 votes, representing 52.63% of all ballots cast by Romanian citizens in Moldova.

Nicusor Dan will face George Simion, the candidate of the far-right AUR party, in the runoff on May 18.

In Moldova, George Simion came in third, with 11,282 votes (12.47%), behind Crin Antonescu, the candidate backed by Romania’s governing coalition, who earned 19,630 votes (21.69%).

According to official data from the Permanent Electoral Authority (PEA), Simion received the most votes in most Romanian counties and among Romanian voters abroad. The AUR party leader won the first round with 40.96% of all votes, followed by Nicusor Dan with 20.99%.

It is worth mentioning that Romanian citizens in Moldova turned out in record numbers. About 90,851 voters cast their ballots, surpassing the previous record of nearly 81,000, set in the annulled first round of the 2024 presidential election on November 24.

According to PEA data, the most Moldovan active voters were aged 45 to 64, while the 18–24 age group had the lowest turnout.

Romanians in Moldova were among the most active voters outside Romania, following those in Italy, Germany, the UK, and Spain.
