(VIDEO) The CEC: Moldovan Youth Can Legally Engage in Political Activities Starting at Age 15

According to Pavel Postica, vice president of the Central Election Commission (CEC), young people in the Republic of Moldova can legally participate in political activities starting at age 15. He made the statement during the “Rezoomat” program on Rlive TV.

“We have a reality—young people already participate in political activities, distributing flyers and leaflets. And we also have a legal framework that allows it. The law permits young people to work part-time and sign service contracts. Moreover, political parties receive state subsidies for involving youth in political processes,” Postica explained.

He emphasized that Moldovan law defines a “young person” as anyone between the ages of 14 and 35, which legally enables their participation in political volunteering, including the distribution of electoral materials.

“In legal terms, a young person is anyone aged 14 or older. So their involvement in political life is possible and encouraged,” Postica said.

He also pointed to a contradiction in society’s expectations regarding youth political engagement.

“We often complain that young people are uninvolved in politics and don’t vote. But how can we exclude them from the political process until they turn 18 and then expect them to suddenly become active voters?” he questioned.

Postica stressed the importance of creating opportunities for youth to engage with the political system before they reach voting age, noting that early involvement fosters informed and active citizens.
