New Independent Candidate Applies for Parliamentary Elections

The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) received a new application today from an initiative group backing independent candidate Oleg Bolotnicov, who plans to run in the September 28 parliamentary elections. According to IPN, 19 individuals have so far announced their intention to stand as independent candidates.

So far, the CEC has officially registered only one independent candidate — Andrei Nastase. Deputy Olesea Stamate has submitted her signature lists to the Commission, which is now verifying them.

Sixteen other prospective independent candidates are still gathering signatures. Of the 19 contenders, only three have formed official initiative groups, while the rest are collecting the required signatures individually.
