On 30 July, the court will deliver a verdict in a case involving former members of the Credit Committee of the Savings Bank of Moldova (Banca de Economii), who face charges over alleged irregularities in loan issuance.

Prosecutors allege that between 2005 and 2012, the former chairman of the bank, Grigore Gacikevici, together with four members of the Credit Committee, issued non-performing loans to several business entities.

They say the defendants violated internal regulations and banking prudential standards by approving loans without properly assessing repayment capacity. Prosecutors claim they relied on incomplete documentation, failed to adequately verify beneficiaries, accepted unclear repayment sources, and did not properly evaluate or monitor guarantees. In some cases, borrowers used the funds for purposes other than those declared.

According to the prosecution, these actions caused losses of around 3 billion lei to Banca de Economii. Prosecutors are requesting a 15-year prison sentence for Gacikevici in a semi-closed penitentiary. They are also requesting up to 13-year sentences for the other defendants, a five-year ban on holding positions in the banking sector, and joint liability for recovering the alleged financial damage in favour of the bank.
