The resignation of Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu will not affect the European Union’s support for Moldova or the country’s accession process, according to officials in Brussels.

Quoted by Moldova 1, European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert said the EU’s executive had taken note of the prime minister’s resignation and respects Moldova’s constitutional procedures.

“We take note of Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu’s decision to resign. We respect the constitutional and democratic processes of the Republic of Moldova and look forward to the formation of a new government,” Lammert said.

The European Commission stressed that its partnership with Moldova remains strong and that the EU will continue supporting the country’s reforms and European integration.

“We are confident that a new government will be formed quickly (…) and that Moldova will maintain the pace of its reform agenda and continue advancing on its path toward EU accession,” Lammert added.

Romanian Member of the European Parliament Siegfried Muresan, who chairs the EU–Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, also told Moldova 1 that the change of prime minister does not jeopardize Moldova’s European course or the ongoing accession negotiations.

According to Muresan, several factors ensure continuity in Moldova’s European integration process, including the European Union’s support, public backing for EU membership, the country’s pro-European parliamentary majority, and the continued implementation of reforms.
