The Government led by Vasile Tofan received a vote of confidence from the parliamentary majority on Tuesday evening, July 21, after more than nine hours of questions and answers during the Parliament’s plenary session.
The PSRM, PCRM, Alternativa, Our Party, and Democracy at Home parliamentary factions did not vote in favor of the new Cabinet.
The government program was approved with the support of 53 lawmakers.
The Government’s activity program, titled “European Economy, Efficient State,” focuses on economic recovery, accelerating Moldova’s accession to the European Union, improving state efficiency, strengthening security, and increasing citizens’ quality of life.
According to Prime Minister-designate Vasile Tofan, the Executive’s goals include simplifying regulations for businesses, increasing public investment in infrastructure, and modernizing agriculture and the energy sector. The program includes, among other measures, the rehabilitation of at least 100 kilometers of roads annually, investments of at least 7 billion lei in agriculture, and increasing the share of renewable energy to more than 35%.
A major objective of the new Government is preparing the Republic of Moldova to complete negotiations and sign the European Union accession treaty by the end of 2028. Following Parliament’s confidence vote, the Government is expected to be officially appointed by the President and begin its work after Cabinet members take the oath of office.
In his speech before the confidence vote in Parliament, Prime Minister-designate Vasile Tofan said he wants to be a prime minister for all citizens, not for a political party. He acknowledged that Moldova is a divided society and said that one of his priorities would be bringing people closer together and promoting solutions that unite the country.
“I do not intend to be the government of one party. I understand that, if I receive the vote, I have the responsibility to defend the interests of all Moldovans, regardless of which party they voted for,” Vasile Tofan said.
The prime minister-designate pledged to defend the interests of all citizens and said he would have the courage to implement even unpopular reforms if they are necessary for the country’s development. At the same time, he emphasized that he is not pursuing a political career, but rather aims to fulfill his mandate with integrity, responsibility, and dedication to moving Moldova forward.
“I want to be a prime minister who unites this country, who moves this country forward, and who has the courage to undertake reforms, including unpopular ones,” Vasile Tofan added.
