“As the Republic of Moldova celebrates 35 years of freedom, the United States reaffirms its commitment to supporting the sovereignty and independence of the Moldovan people,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a message to the citizens of Moldova on Independence Day.

The message from the US official highlights the increasingly close relations between Washington and Chisinau and the cooperation developed between the two countries over the past year. Rubio said the partnership has expanded across several areas, from the economy to border security and regional stability.

“We have expanded economic ties, strengthened border security and worked together to promote stability in the region,” the US secretary of state said.

Rubio stressed that the United States will continue to support Moldova in strengthening its sovereignty and independence. He also conveyed his wishes to the Moldovan people for peace, prosperity and continued progress.

“On this day, I extend to the people of the Republic of Moldova my sincere wishes for peace, prosperity and continued progress,” Rubio said.

The Republic of Moldova is marking 35 years since the proclamation of independence on Thursday, August 27. The Declaration of Independence was adopted by Parliament on August 27, 1991, marking Moldova’s emergence as an independent state.
