Moldova and Ukraine have signed a military-technical cooperation agreement, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan announced in Kyiv. The Moldovan head of government said the decision follows repeated violations of Moldovan airspace.
The prime minister reported that more than 100 such incidents had occurred since the beginning of the war. According to the official, these incidents cannot be ignored.
“Ukraine has accumulated extraordinary experience — arguably the best in the world — in countering drones, including through effective, low-cost technological solutions. We want to learn from this experience and identify solutions to protect our airspace. This is natural cooperation between two neighbouring countries.
Moldova is and will remain a peaceful and neutral state. But neutrality does not mean being defenceless. Our duty is to protect peace and the safety of our citizens,” Vasile Tofan said.
Other issues discussed with Serghei Korețchi in Kyiv included energy interconnection, the situation on the Dniester River, trade relations, and European integration.
“The relationship between our countries means concrete projects for citizens and the economy. We are working to develop road and rail corridors for Ukrainian goods, European Solidarity Corridors, modernise border crossing points, and expand joint border controls. These initiatives open up new opportunities for trade, investment, and Ukraine’s reconstruction. (…)
Energy security was an important topic of our discussions. We need resilient energy systems that are interconnected and integrated into the European market.
We want to accelerate the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Moldelectrica and Ukrenergo and advance preparations for the project to build a second circuit of the Bălți–Dnestrovsk power line. This interconnection could add 500 MW to electricity exchange capacity. It is an important step towards strengthening our energy independence and security. (…)
We already have an energy bridge: electricity flows between our countries in both directions, and we are now discussing deeper cooperation in the gas sector as well. Moldova’s Railway earns significant revenue from the transit of Ukrainian goods. We are also working to attract more Ukrainian businesses to Moldova, including in logistics and warehousing — supporting Ukraine while bringing investment and jobs to our own country,” Vasile Tofan said.
The Moldovan prime minister added that the authorities in Chișinău appreciate Kyiv’s determination to implement reforms even under wartime conditions. According to Moldova’s head of government, both countries are cooperating to advance along their European paths.
